Torpedo Rocks Reserve Shiraz 2019
100% Shiraz
Yield: 4 tonne/hectare
Soils: Black sandy loam over limestone with a high ph.
Winemaking: Dry grown, hand-picked, basket pressed in whole bunches, malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged for 22 months in 10% Grande Reserve American Oak and 90% Grande Reserve French Oak used with the new oak component being 35% with 2, and 3 year old oak barriques. The new oak percentage has come from middle of the Forrest growth oak with a tighter knit and seamless feel. Minimal intervention when bottled.
Tasting Comments: Using the term “colour” to describe this wine is an oxymoron because there isn’t one – it’s just black. This is like the 2018 vintage but on steroids; extremely fruit focused with dried figs, ripe forest fruits and sweeter notes of choc cherry liqueur, vanilla, liquorice and touches of spices. Smooth, rich fruit comes through with beautifully balanced white pepper. The tannins are like a perfect support band at a concert, not outperforming the main act (the fruit) but combining smoothly to create a ripper experience whereby you have to purchase the tour t-shirt.
